The fear of getting placed in a dream company with a decent job profile is everyone’s goal in the final year. With the competition being extreme, the probability that one would sail off and be successful is low. It gets even lower when one fails to make it to his dream job in the first few attempts.
How does one make sure that the on-campus placement season proves to be a boon? Read the story of Surendra Rathore, a BITSian who did not lose his patience even when he did not make it to Goldman Sachs and Amazon. Instead, he held his courage, figured out what was it that he was doing wrong. With the help of an expert’s guidance in the IT Industry, he came back stronger and cracked the interview at JP Morgan.
In conversation with Team TapChief:
How many companies did you sit for, during the placement season?
Surendra: I sat for all Day 0 and Day 1 (Dream and Super Dream) companies but had my eyes set on three super dream companies- Goldman Sachs, Amazon and JP Morgan. I tried to put in my best to crack all of them, but somehow couldn’t get through the final rounds of Goldman Sachs and Amazon.
When did you feel like there is a need for an expert’s advice?
Surendra: Like I said,
“I prepared for the dream companies but missed out on them by some mistake or the other”
That is when I realized that my preparation was not enough. I felt the need to know that a mentor will be able to guide me better on what I was doing wrong. TapChief was mentioned to me by a friend, and that’s how I got connected to an expert at TapChief, whose guidance helped me get my dream job at JP Morgan.
Tell us in detail about your process with how your coach trained you.
Surendra: The program was devised in a very simple and effective manner. The team at TapChief helped me get connected with the right expert who could solve my queries. I went through a training of 4 sessions, each call was for 15 minutes and each session dealt with different aspects of the placement process of the company I was aiming for.
Session 1: It was an introduction call; we exchanged a brief about each other and I got to know about the industry better. All my doubts on the IT industry and the interview process were cleared. After the call, I was asked to send in my resume for feedback.
Session 2: This session primarily focused on my resume. We spoke about the structure of the resume, keywords, the way to present my skills so that it is inline with the company’s needs.
Session 3: In our third call, we concentrated on how I should tackle the interviews and how I would have to present myself. I was instructed to prepare for the aptitude test. My coach shared with me the material from where it is advisable to study for the written rounds.
Session 4: This was the final call. My coach took my mock interview, and gave me feedback on the same.
Were you satisfied with the counselling? What, in particular, did you like about your coach?
Surendra: Even when one goes about learning all languages or preparing from various study materials, one cannot be sure whether the preparation is sufficient enough to land him/her the job he desires. That is when the coach plays his role.
The right guidance instills confidence and fills in the voids to crack the interview. My coach helped me with the links of the relevant materials recruiters generally refer to, she also helped me with a feedback on my resume, asked me to add and highlight certain aspects and delete the not so important ones.
“A personalized focus and counselling on the job preparation was the highlight of TapChief’s Job Coach Program.”
What were the different rounds you had to undergo to land up at JP Morgan?
- Written Round: Questions based on aptitude and coding languages were asked in this round.
- Technical Rounds: Questions to test our technical knowledge related to the Computer Science disciplines were being focused on.
- HR Round: Basic company-fit questions were asked. This was generally to check on how my work ethics are.
Will you recommend your peers to sign up for the Job Coach Program at TapChief?
Surendra: Yes, definitely!
My coach reviewed my resume, took mock interviews, advised me to work smart and hard to make sure I get placed at JP Morgan. Besides the scheduled calls, there was an online chat support provided to me 24*7 to get assistance at any point of time I felt stuck during my interview preparation.
For me, it was
“A little off the wallet, but a lot off the mind.”
